The government of Uttarakhand after making the Mussoorie Winterline Carnival the city’s premier event, last year; and promoting it as a tourist attraction has backed up their commitment with a 50-lakh outlay for the event, however below expectations, but it will help the festival sail in a tough year. The event shall take place as planned cashing in on the Christmas- New Year holiday period.
The six-day festival will be organised from December 25 to 30 as per schedule. The event might be toned down owing to the upcoming state elections and many officers occupied with other responsibilities related to preparations. Further, the ex-officio chairman of the festival, the district magistrate, Ravinath Raman, has also expressed his inability to conduct the event, if the code of conduct for the elections becomes applicable. It would be unfeasible for Raman to lead the preparations.
Former BSF DIG Manoranjan Tripathi has been sighted by a Times of India report as the replacement chairman. “I have yet to get any official intimation but it would be a great honour for me to be associated with anything that is good for my hometown. I look forward to participating in all the functions,” Tripathi told ToI.
In its fourth edition, the event is much delayed in it’s preparation, unlike last year when programme schedule, artist bookings and advertisements, social media and outdoor promotions began much in advance. It generated a lot of publicity and attracted a lot of outsiders at the event.
This year, big names might be missing from the line up and more local artists might get stage at the event.
About the Mussoorie Winterline:
The grey and mauve hues visible on the Mussoorie horizon above the Shivalik range surrounding the Doon valley is referred to as the ‘winter line’. The winter line is a phenomenon unique to Mussoorie and parts of Switzerland, caused by the refraction of sunlight at a particular angle, and visible from mountain areas with a long, clear view of a valley towards the west. The winterline phenomena is visible at sunset from mid-October till late January.
