Since the formation of the Anti-Romeo Squad, by the district police in Chetganj, Varanasi, around seven suspected ‘Romeos’ have been caught so far.
According to Anurag Arya, ARS observer and Chetganj CO, the squad has so far caught seven youths, who were later taken into custody. They were caught on the basis of the questionable activities around girls’ colleges. However, they were allowed to go home, once their credentials had been cross checked and their families informed.
Arya also said that clear guidelines have been set for the squad. They are to take the accused to the police station to verify their credentials as well as past records and no disciplinary actions are to be taken against the said ‘Romeos’ at a public place.
He also added that in case the said individual has been indulging in teasing or molestation at the time of being arrested, or has old record in similar cases, the individual will be charged under the appropriate sections.
The tasks for the squad have been allotted on a day-wise basis, for differnet areas. Between morning to afternoon, they will be patrolling near educational institutions. Between late afternoons and evening, they will operate near public parks, multiplexes and markets.
