Ex Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, recently joined the Congress party, ahead of the upcoming assembly election in Punjab. Joining the Congress party, Sidhu, ended months of speculation regarding his dwindling political status after he left the BJP, sometime last year.
The multi-talented entertainer cum politician will however, officially join the party on Monday, at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi.
Sidhu, who was supposed to join the Congress last week, went out of communication at the last minute.
It is believed that the Ex-cricketer will be a prime vote catcher, and is likely to help the Congress in putting up a strong fight against the Akali Dal and the AAP in the upcoming elections in Punjab.
The Congress party is hoping to come back to power in Punjab, after almost a decade. The state goes to polls on February 4.
On Sidhu’s induction into the party, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjawala said that, “Known for his straight talking, ideological commitment to nationalism as also wit and humour, we are certain the Congress party will be immensely strengthened in Punjab and elsewhere with the entry of Sidhu.”
Sidhu, who quit the Rajya Sabha in July, and left the BJP a few months later in September of last year after months of bitterness.
It was being said that he might join the Aam Aadmi Party, however, the speculation did not materialise, and talks broke down last year. The reason for both parties not being able to reach a successful conclusion was apparently AAP’s refusal to name a Chief Ministerial Candidate for the state. The party did, however, offer him the post of deputy CM.
Sidhu was also in talks with former hockey captain, Pargat Singh, as well as the Bains brother to form their own political outfit, Awaaz-e-Punjab. That too, however, did not materialise.
Sidhu, once again, opened communication with the Aam Aadmi Party, and with the Congress party, simultaneously.
Furthermore, his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu resigned from the BJP and has also joined the INC.
