The Indian contingent breathed a sigh of relief after beating New Zealand 3-1, in the Davis Cup
Asia/Oceania Group 1 match at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune.
Ramkumar Ramanathan won both his singles matches against New Zealand, allowing India to take the important opening lead. In the final game, Ramkumar Ramanathan beat Finn Tearney 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 ensuring India qualified to the next round of this years’ Davis Cup tournament.
Ramkumar’s win against Tearney came as a relief after Vishnu Vardhan and veteran Leander Paes’s shock loss in the doubles match up earlier in the tournament.
Ramanathan and Tearney fought hard and won the first set 7-5, but once Ramanathan took the first set, he blazed off to sink his opponent 6-1 and 6-0 in the next two sets quite easily.
On Day 1 of the Davis Cup contest, both Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan won their singles matches giving India a 2-0 lead.
Yuki Bhambri beat New Zealand’s number one Finn Tearney in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Ramkumar also dominated his opening match against Jose Statham to win 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
On Day 2, India assured to close the tie with their star performer, Leander Paes set to pick up his record 43rd win in all Davis Cup matches, however that wasn’t to be. India led by Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan against New Zealand’s Artem Sitak and Michael Venus in the doubles match lost 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3.
