ISL 2016 Final: Atletico de Kolkata beat Kerala Blasters to win their second ISL title in three years

Leaving the home side desolate Atletico de Kolkata won the ISL 2016 final in Kochi. For the first time the final went to the penalty shootouts, and Kolkata emerged as the ones with a more resilient outfit winning a prize money of Rs. 8 crore this season.

This was the second time, Kerala Blasters reached the final of the ISL only to finish second; incidentally, losing both times to Atletico de Kolkata.

The well contested game was evenly poised and ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of regular football.

Kerala Blasters who scored the first goal in the 37th minute, with striker Mohammad Rafi finding the back of the net on a Mehtab Hossain corner.

Kerala kept pushing Kolkata and played a brilliant man to man marking football game, denying Kolkata any run-ins for the longest time.

The Blasters’ kept building momentum, while Atletico de Kolkata kept trying to find the equalizer, which came in the 43rd minute of the game. Sandesh Jhinghan, the Indian defender tried tooth and nail to keep Henrique Sereno out but he powerfully headed home a leveler for his team.
