Ramjas Row: Sehwag says those threatening Gurmehar with rape are lowlifes

virender-sehwagEx-opening batsman for India, Virender Sehwag, landed himself in a soup when he chimed in with the rest of the nation to troll Gurmehar, the daughter of a Kargil war veteran, who took a stand against the violent attack by ABVP at Ramjas College, Delhi.

The 20 year old student had been subjected to much online trolling and was also threatened with threats of rape.

The cricketer dragged himself into an unnecessary controversy with his remark “I did not score two triple centuries, my bat did”, essentially changing the discourse of Gurmehar’s anti-violence remark, to one which was pro-Pakistan.

Social media is a relentless platform, where no one is safe from the trolling that is levied by self proclaimed experts. Sometimes, this trolling may take the form of online bullying, which Sehwag was being blamed for, by many. And many called out national level wrestlers Babita Phogat and Yogeshwar Dutt for doing much the same.

All three sports people have now gone to clarify themselves, saying that, threatening a women with rape is unacceptable, and indicative of a  low life.

Sehwag tweeted saying that,

He then went on add that everyone, including Gurmehar has a right to speak their mind.

Babita Phogat also tweeted clarifying her stance on the controversy saying that she does not stand for women being bullied or harassed but she cannot stand her nation being disrespected.

Yogeshwar Dutt on the other hand said that he does not condemn Gurmehar, but simply holds a different point of view.

Gurmehar, a student of Lady Sri Ram College, is being supported by her institution for taking a stand.  The young student said that she isn’t afraid of the RSS student group ABVP.

She has however, withdrawn from the campaign, saying that she has been brave, but this is all that her 20 year old self can handle.
