How to Clean Diesel Engine Air Filters in 5 Steps

Diesel Engine Air Filters

Are you tired of paying for costly repairs or worrying about your car breaking down? If you drive a diesel car, you should do everything you can to ensure you keep your air filters in tip-top shape.

But how do you clean diesel engine air filters? Is there a special way to do so or can you just take them to your neighborhood car mechanic and call it a day?

Read on to find out.

1. Remove the Filter

Open the hood of the vehicle and identify the air filter housing. The housing will usually be rectangular and will have a cover with a filter inside.

Next, use a screwdriver to unscrew the housing cover and gently remove the lid. Removing the air filter on a diesel engine is an easy task that takes only a few minutes.

2. Remove the Filter Elements

First, remove the air filter cover. Pay close attention to make sure the filter cover is correctly lined up when replacing it. Next, loosen and remove the mounting screws that hold the filter element in place.

Carefully remove the filter element from the air filter housing. Inspect the filter element for dirt or wear.

3. Use a Brush, Vacuum, or Compressed Air

Start by removing the filter element from the housing of the air filter and set it aside. If the filter element has dirt or dust attached to it, use a small brush or vacuum to remove the debris.

Then, use compressed air to blow out any dust or dirt remaining in the filter element. With the proper use of a brush vacuum or compressed air to clean the elements of your diesel particulate filter, you can ensure cleanliness and engine efficiency.

4. Submerge in Diesel Fuel

Begin by draining the fuel from the air filter and then placing the air filters in a tub or bucket. Be sure the filters are fully submerged.

Leave the filters in the fuel for a short amount of time, no longer than several minutes. Then remove the air filters from the fuel, and rinse them with clean water.

Having a diesel engine air filter cleaner is important to ensure that your air filter is free of any debris. Clean air filters can provide better fuel economy and less engine wear and tear.

5. Reassemble the Filter

The filter typically includes the housing, the filter element, rubber grommets, a sealing ring, a pressure relief valve, and a drain plug. Begin by inserting the filter element into the housing and fastening the rubber grommets to keep them secure. Then position the sealing ring and fill the valve into the housing as well, making sure they are correctly aligned.

Now attach the pressure relief valve and the drain plug. Make sure to properly seal them into place before moving on. Finally, place the filter assembly into the fuel system and screw the assembly in place.
