According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), as much as 279 technical institutions are fake across the whole country, while Delhi has 66 out of the lot.
The country’s capital also has seven out of the country’s 23 fake universities, the Commission said.
The UGC and AICTE, last month, put out a list of fake institutes on their websites, www.ugc.ac.in and www.aicte-india.org, forewarning all the students ahead of the new academic session beginning the next month.
A number of colleges and universities from UP, Bihar, Bengal, and Odisha are among the ‘unapproved and unregulated technical institutions’ list beside Delhi.
“The Council shall maintain a list of un-approved institutions based on the information received by the council and shall also inform the general public about the same from time to time.” AICTE has stated on its website.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development of India, recently, wrote to state governments asking to investigate and register police complaints against such fake universities.
Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of State for HRD, commented on the issue. The states have also been asked to initiate proceedings against those involved in defrauding and cheating students “by misrepresenting themselves as ‘universities’ awarding degrees with their name”. Pandey said.
It is a matter of great concern for the government, educational institutions and the public as well; as the number of frauds or ‘unapproved or unregulated’ institutions pertaining to the educational sector is on an increase for students, now, look for higher education to multiply their job prospects.
