Hector Carlos Lora is the current mayor of the city of Passaic, NJ, serving his second term as the city’s mayor after his reelection in 2021. Lora won the election by a landslide mainly because of his efforts to improve and upgrade the city through several policy measures and projects. He started his first tenure as the city’s mayor in 2017 by immediately introducing several unprecedented measures, including regular community park cleanups, weekly administrative meetings, and appreciation events for city hall employees. Lora took several initiatives in the local community while appealing to the masses due to the long-term positive effects on the people.

Lora initiated numerous programs related to social uplift, environmental conservation, and economic stimulus to improve the lives and well-being of Passaic residents and enhance the city’s outlook. He took several initiatives during his first year as Passaic mayor, including seminars for raising rights awareness, Independence Day fireworks, and increasing civic engagement for annual participation in the international walk to the school day. Lora proposed and presented an initiative to prevent children’s gang recruitment by offering alternative recreational activities at the New Jersey Mayors’ Conference in 2017. He also organized Kwanza recognition and educational workshops along with holiday tree lightings during Christmas. Some family festivals and events organized by Lora’s team include cookoffs, health fairs, family festivals, holiday events, Mother’s Day events, fitness activities, Piñata Drop, Father’s Day fishing, grand posada, and giveaways. The mayor worked for increased inclusion and opportunities for children with special needs, including inclusive play fundraising events and providing recreational equipment for kids with special needs at Blue Parks. Lora developed several projects for improving academic, healthcare, economic, and social opportunities for the local community, unemployed individuals, and small businesses. The Aisle One Supermarket was a landmark project completed by Lora, transforming a dilapidated industrial site into a comprehensive store to offer shoppers a Kosher experience while creating jobs.

Hector Carlos Lora completed several recreation and social welfare projects during his first term as mayor, including a synthetic ice-skating rink, the Pet Safe Park, Dundee Island Park, and New Sonia Sotomayor School #21. Lora also introduced the Barbershop Bill in 2017, allowing experienced hairstylists and barbers to work in Passaic City while waiting for their New Jersey licenses, enacted into law by the governor in 2019. The mayor also organized several programs and events to improve Passaic’s social and racial harmony, including the Dominican Festival/Parade, Italian flag raising, and Mexican independence celebration.

Lora improved awareness and social welfare by ordering and organizing several environmental and healthcare drives, including household hazardous waste disposal and the vaccinating Passaic campaign. He also introduced programs for veterans and the homeless, including converting the VFW hall into veterans’ housing and mailboxes for the homeless. The mayor developed a comprehensive city redevelopment plan with over $273 million in investment for redeveloping several infrastructure, residential, and commercial structures and zones.
